Monsoonal Moisture Influences Deadly Flash Flood in Grand Canyon

  • Abundant tropical moisture brought north by Tropical Storm Karina fueled monsoonal rains over the eastern Grand Canyon, causing in flash flooding along Bright Angel Creek. The flooding necessitated the rescue of at least 80 people and two deaths have been reported.
  • The burn scar from last year’s Dragon Bravo Fire and ongoing drought created soil conditions susceptible to flash flooding and debris flows in the western Grand Canyon.
  • The highest precipitation estimates between 12Z Fri 28 Aug and 12Z Sun 30 Aug were located over the southern extent of the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire burn scar and Bright Angel Creek.
