CW3E Welcomes Dr. Gimena Casaretto
April 4, 2026
Gimena joined CW3E in April 2026 as a Postdoctoral Scholar after completing her Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, under Dr. Maria Eugenia Dillon. Her Ph.D. research examined the impact of different sets of observations on a regional ensemble data assimilation system, using the ensemble forecast sensitivity to observation impact (EFSOI) methodology. Experiments were carried out to apply EFSOI for the first time in South America, evaluating the impact of data from automatic and conventional weather stations, radiosondes, aircraft, and satellites.
At CW3E, Gimena’s postdoctoral research will explore the implementation of a data assimilation system for the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS), using the Joint Effort for Data Assimilation Integration (JEDI) framework. This MPAS-JEDI system will be applied to assess the impact of Atmospheric River Reconnaissance data across a range of forecast leadtimes. Understand how field observations such as dropsondes and ocean drifters improve initial conditions over the North Pacific Ocean and subsequent forecasts of landfalling atmospheric rivers and other high-impact events in multiple downstream regions.
