Box Springs Reserve Rules and Regulations:
- You must have permission to enter the Reserve from the Director prior to coming on the reserve. In addition, some areas are restricted because of ongoing research or sensitive species. You need to coordinate with the Director where you can walk or drive on the reserve.
- If you are currently established as a researcher, please contact reserve personnel at least 3 or 4 days in advance to let them know when you will be on the reserve. We currently have more than one project using the same some of the areas as long as they do not conflict with each other's research.
- It is the responsibility of the leader of a group or project to ensure that all persons in the group are familiar with these rules and all safety precautions. Emergency handbooks and first aid guides are located in all headquarters structures.
- Normally use of this Reserve should be restricted to groups of less than 25 persons.
- MAXIMUM vehicle speed on the reserve is 15 m.p.h. Slower speeds may be necessary if wildlife is present on or near the roads.
- All vehicles should be parked in the designated areas and none should be driven off the roads or outside of the parking areas. If you do not know where these parking areas are check with the reserve director or staff.
- No bicycles, motorbikes, motorcycles or off highway vehicles are allowed within the Reserve.
- No pets or horses are allowed within the Reserve.
- No smoking is allowed.
- No open fires are permitted on the Reserve.
- No possession or transport of firearms is allowed.
- Collecting vertebrate animals is not allowed within the Reserve. However, live-trapping and releasing the animals is permitted, only after approval of an application for research or teaching is accepted by the reserve director and copies of all required permits/MOUs are provided for the reserve files.
- No mass collection of invertebrates or plants is allowed within the Reserve without permission from the Reserve Director.
- Please do not disturb marked research plots.
- Research plot locations must be approved by the Reserve Director before being used and marked. Research plots should be clearly marked and identified with the name of the researcher and the date. A map showing the location of the research plots must be provided for the Reserve files. At the conclusion of the project, stakes and equipment must be removed and the area policed. A $35.00/hr. fee will be charged for any cleanup required by reserve staff.
- A copy of any reports, periodical papers, theses or dissertations generated from any research must be provided to the reserve for its files.
- Maps of the reserve to assist you are available from the staff.
- Before departure, please clean up all areas used by your group. All waste material, such as tin cans and garbage, must be removed from the Reserve. Under no circumstances is any waste material to be left anywhere in the Reserve. Do not bury your garbage. Please note that permission to use the Reserve may be withdrawn or denied in the future if any of the rules and regulations of the Reserve are violated.
