MNA from the East, looking West
it north of the tipping bucket pole. The soil pit is north and a little bit east of the tripod.
MNA is located in a large tree clearing with short grasses and small scattered rocks. The station is close to trees on the west and north sides of the station. Originally, we wanted to locate the station more centrally in the clearing, but to protect views of the landowners, we had to move it more uphill and closer to the trees.
The soil at MNA has organic matter in the top 20 cm, and is more clay dominated in layers further below the surface. There are potato size rocks in the soil layers, but not very many, and digging isn’t too laborious, especially with a hammer drill. The hydraprobes however, were very difficult to stick into the dense clay wall of the soil pit.
The property owner advised us of overland flow and a high water table in the area.
The station is approximately 80 miles from the ocean, which controls the climate of the area.
