PVN is on a grassy, south facing hillside used for grazing on the north end of Potter Valley. The aspect is ~177 deg and slope is ~4 deg. PVN is within the boundary of the 2018 Mendocino Complex Fire.

  • Stay in Ukiah and drive to Potter Valley.
  • Lots of wasp activity, bring Raid wasp killer.
  • Beware of cows and close all gates to keep the cows in.
  • Parking next to the site is not advised as a spring on the south side of the site keeps the area very muddy and could get your vehicle stuck.
  • Bring a ladder since the enclosure is far off the ground.
  • Make sure you have connections for RS232 because the datalogger is a CR1000.

Tasks

Due Owner Created By Details
-- -- Lisa Katz Add a campbell scientific flathead screwdriver to the enclosure pocket.
-- -- Lisa Katz No serial number sticker or calibration sticker on anemometer. Find out when the anemometer was last calibrated and make some stickers for it.
-- -- Lisa Katz Replace broken CS320 pyranometer with SP2 Lite.
-- -- Lisa Katz Soil sensors (6) enter into the enclosure through a gland that has one big hole and a lot of monkey poo (see picture of bottom of the enclosure). The monkey poo is old and no longer keeping the wasps out. Install new gland with (6) punch outs for the sensor cables. Alternatively, install new monkey poo that covers the entire void into the enclosure gland.
-- -- Lisa Katz There were two wasps nests on the underside of the solar panel, there were also active wasps going in and out of a gland at the bottom of the enclosure. Lisa thoroughly sprayed the wasps nests and the bottom of the enclosure with Raid wasp killer. On the next visit, the wasps may or may not have recolonized the nests. Either way, the nests need to be removed and the enclosure sealed up. Suggestion to remove the wasps nests if they were not recolonized, and if so, use more Raid and then remove them. Bring paper towels and water to clean any wasp nest residue inside the enclosure (see picture of wasp nest attempts at the top of the enclosure).
-- -- Lisa Katz Determine what kind of venting on the enclosure
