Observing Systems
Use and develop state-of-the-art observing systems to study the roles of atmospheric rivers, orographic precipitation, boundary layer, soil moisture and microphysical processes in water cycle extreme events
- Utilize the HMT-West Legacy Network sponsored by DWR/EFREP
- Utilize unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), both large and small, operated by others
- Establish an atmospheric profiler observing capability at SIO (2 transportable systems)
- Use and evaluate emerging satellite-based remote sensing, e.g., GPM, SWOT, SMAP, with JPL
- Evaluate and recommend observing network alternatives for the Western U.S. for extreme events
