CPR is located on the Carpenter Ranch Preserve, private property owned by the Nature Conservancy, approximately 4 miles E of Hayden, CO and 20 miles W of Steamboat Springs, CO. The station is located on the banks of the Yampa River in a grassy pasture surrounded by cottonwood trees. The soil is soft and loamy at the surface but becomes coarser sand and gravel with some small cobbles towards the base of the soil pit--likely river sediments from a former channel.
