Visited the site to change the cellular modem/radio firmware, move the AT&T SIM card into the right slot, retrieve the Verizon SIM card, and to update the APN on the modem. The site was in good condition and there was no visible damage to the tower or to the soil pit. Hooked up the field laptop to the datalogger using the connection cable, retrieved the data on the station and the uploaded the “Cell On” program to make sure that the modem will be on while I update it’s firmware since I was operating outside of the troubleshooting window. Connected to the modem on the field laptop via an ethernet cable and logged into Ace Manager. Attempted to update the firmware by clicking on the “Software and Firmware” button. Continually got an error message when trying to update the modem firmware and the radio firmware that the file was initialized, uploaded, but it could not apply the firmware because “Check failed. Could not find signature or certificate in the package”. However, after trying to upload the radio firmware in the “Admin” tab, the computer reported it was successful and the “Software and Firmware” screen reflected that AT&T firmware was now active. Next, I updated the APN to psmtneorm, which was listed in the documentation as the APN for the site. This did not get the modem to connect. The sun had set, it was dropping into the low 30’s so there was not time to troubleshoot this issue. I ran into Emily Howe and updated her on what I was doing and that it was not successful and that I had to leave. We later found that the APN needed to be psmtneofin, and Jeremiah Psiroloulos updated the APN using these instructions which allowed the modem to connect and establish telemetry successfully.
